25 hours. Dozens of speeches. A historic fight against the income tax

For nearly 25 hours, Rep. Travis Couture, R- Allyn, stood on the House floor again and again — pushing back against Washington’s first income tax and warning about what it could mean for families, jobs, and the state’s financial future. Couture argued the proposal was rushed forward without fully considering the economic risks — and without the voices of millions of Washingtonians being represented in the process. “This is one of the most consequential decisions we make as lawmakers,” Couture said during the debate. “Once you open the door to an income tax, it’s very hard to close.”
