House Republican Budget Leader Travis Couture calls $80 Billion Budget passed by House Dems harmful spending plan supported by quicksand

House Republican Budget Leader Rep. Travis Couture, R-Allyn, led the fight for Republicans Saturday during the more than nine-hour debate on the majority Democrats’ proposed budget. Couture and House Republicans orchestrated a battle plan through amendments aimed at limiting the damage from the $80 billion spending plan, which Couture described as being built on quicksand because it relies on billions from an unconstitutional income tax and a legally questionable raid of law enforcement and firefighter pensions.

While Democrats accepted amendments to help crime victims and the developmentally disabled, they rejected nearly 20 others that would have helped with affordability, including a sales tax break, gas tax rebate, and $2 billion in property tax relief. Democrats also rejected Republican amendments to protect classrooms, restore Medicaid funding for the most vulnerable, stop fraud, truly invest in more law enforcement, and save babies and toddlers from fentanyl amid a record number of fentanyl-related deaths among children involved in Washington’s child welfare system.
