Dear Friends and Neighbors,

The 2025 session is here, and I am ready to get to work!

This session, I have some new responsibilities.

I was recently named ranking member on the House Appropriations Committee, which basically means I am the Republican budget lead for the House. Our state is currently in crisis and facing a budget deficit, but this is because we have a spending problem – not a revenue problem.

The majority party has proposed the largest tax increase in state history and is looking at other tax proposals, including a massive property tax increase.

I will do everything I can to ensure that does not happen. I know how hard Washingtonians are struggling with our current affordability crisis. The cost of housing, groceries, gas, and more is hitting all of us hard. I will fight all new taxes and support responsible budgeting as we work toward our final budget.

I have already filed multiple bills to help curb state spending on pet projects.

Aside from my work on the budget, I am also focused on public safety, including protecting young kids from being sent home with parents addicted to fentanyl, creating a stronger juvenile justice system – especially when it comes to kids committing crimes with firearms, and protecting our communities from sexually violent predators.

I am also working on improving educational outcomes for K-12 students in Washington, getting more funding for special education, and improving access to child care, among several other priorities in 2025.

As always, it is important for me to hear from you to do this job well. So, I hope you will contact me often with your thoughts, ideas, and concerns as we get to work in 2025.

Sincerely,

Travis Couture
